Although my Internet connection is quite stable, we’ve had some occasional planned and unplanned outages. While we could always enable mobile tethering on the phones, it would be a peace of mind to not have to worry about any of that. I switched to Ubiquiti’s Dream Router 7 (UDR7) after suffering with wifi issues and generally hearing good things about them. They had also a LTE backup system, but at approximately 300€ with VAT, it wasn’t really an option. Other options might have worked as a second WAN, but all were still expensive and would require some external antennas or mounting (I almost bought one before seeing that it was not recommended for indoor use due to higher power levels). Recently, Ubiquiti launched the Unifi 5G backup at approximately 100€ with VAT (note: post is not sponsored, I don’t get anything for this). This is just the price point to have some peace of mind, so I decided to try it out.

I tend to not like cookiecutter/boilerplate repos because those tend to get out of date quickly, and usually just base new projects off of whatever project I’ve been mostly recently working on. However, I figured it might be better to make occasional blog posts to get some check points on what I think is a good setup for a Python project, which can be interesting to see later on how things change.

With the general state of the world right now, the chance that current allies turn on each other seems ever-growing. I’m not a huge fan of having my main data, especially emails, be handled on servers outside of Europe these days, so I’ve been looking at options of having a service managing it within Europe. This also has benefits in ensuring EU laws around privacy and digital rights, along with generally supporting European companies.
